DESCRIPTION:Soap is one of the fundamental inventions that created the modern world. Consisting of three basic ingredients\, oil\, water\, and a high-pH reactant (we usually use lye)\, soap’s main job is to separate oil and water\, which allows the oils and grime to be washed away. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the three basic ingredients\, there is an endless number of additions that can be used to enhance the smell and color\, change the cleaning properties\, and affect the hardness of the bar\, and the softness of the feel. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, we start in the classroom to learn about the chemical processes happening when you make soap and when you use it. Then\, we’ll take a look at an online soap calculator\, which will allow us to plug in desired traits and get the exact measurements of the ingredients required. \n\n\n\nThen\, we will move to the soap lab and mix up our batch. \n\n\n\nEach student has a soap mold that makes four bars of soap. When the mix is ready\, we pour the so-called batter into each of these molds. \n\n\n\nThe mixture must cool down over night\, but in the morning can be cut into individual bars. The bars will take about six weeks to cure\, during which time it will lose some of the water content and become harder. But mostly\, the curing time will allow the chemicals to get to know each other so they can work together to keep us clean. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

DESCRIPTION:Microgreens\n\n\n\nWith the winter upon us\, now is the time to introduce a little color and fresh food into our homes. Microgreens fit both of these goals. \n\n\n\nA microgreen is really just a regular vegetable that is harvested early in its development cycle. They have been called the “veal of greens” because of their short life and intense flavor. Some crops are better suited to being harvested early than others are. There are several advantages of microgreens\, especially for the living room farmer: \n\n\n\n\nMicrogreens are grown inside\, and so are not as susceptible to insects and other predators. Mold can be a problem\, but there are ways to deal with that.\n\n\n\nBecause of their fast growing cycle and early harvesting\, you can get real food really fast.\n\n\n\nBecause they are grown in soil\, there is less of a chance of bacterial contamination than a soil-less crop such as sprouts.\n\n\n\nHaving a shelf full of green crops growing in your living room really lifts the soul!\n\n\n\n\nFirst\, we’ll talk about the lifecycle of plants and what is happening inside the seed and leaf\, and then taste some samples that have already been grown. \n\n\n\nYou’ll make your own flat\, which contains the soil\, seeds\, and a tray to fit it in. That planted tray is yours to keep\, so you can watch your greens grow and then re-use it for the next batches. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

DESCRIPTION:In New England\, the foraging bees are busy collecting nectar\, pollen\, and water. Back home\, the workers are evaporating the nectar into honey and storing it for the winter. \nThe queen is making babies as fast as she can\, and the nurse bees are feeding the babies pollen for protein and honey for energy. \nThe beekeeper’s job is to provide a comfortable place for all of these activities. In return\, the bees produce more than they need\, and rewards the beekeeper with boxes full of pure honey. \nOur job is to extract that honey from the honeycomb\, bottle it\, and enjoy the fruits of the bees’ labor. \nIn this class\, we’ll do just that.
