Chicken and Grapes

Your First Chicken

A chicken is one of nature’s greatest gifts. If you have a backyard, even a small backyard, you need a couple chickens. They are fun, quiet, entertaining, and they provide you with the absolute best source of protein you are going to find.

Once your hens are mature (it takes 14 to 18 weeks), they’ll lay from 5 to 8 eggs each week. So about an egg every day. Your girls will gladly eat whatever leftovers you want, plus they’ll get bugs in the ground, aerating the soil and leaving behind nitrogen-dense droppings.

In this class, we’ll learn about the lifecycle of a chicken, the pros and cons of various breeds, and the benefits and drawbacks of having roosters along with your hens.

Then we’ll go out and meet our flock and you can see the types of breeds and get an idea of what might be right for you.

You’ll leave with an understanding of these wonderful creatures and an appreciation of just how easy it is to have your own hen or flock.
