I’m an Extra-class Amateur Radio operator with experience in Summits On The Air (SOTA) and Parks On The Air, which both involve setting up radio stations “off-grid” relying on battery and/or solar power. As an amateur radio operator, 100% of my operations have been portable and battery powered.

With SOTA specifically, all gear must be carried with you, and the contact must be made within a certain vertical distance of a mountain summit that meets the standards of the SOTA rulebook. This places an emphasis on lightweight and man-portable gear that is nonetheless reliable enough you don’t hike all day for nothing!
